Infantry Training

A real-time management military units tactical training

Overview

Military training app design

A real-time tactical training app for military units, designed for the Android platform. The goal was to create a realistic training experience for soldiers, simulating different environments, weather conditions, and visibility levels. The app allows commanders to communicate, manage, and analyze training sessions in real time, improving coordination and decision-making in the field.

This project was an exciting challenge, resulting in a highly advanced training tool. The app won an Innovation Award from Military Simulation and Training Magazine and was also adopted by the Peruvian army as its official tactical training platform.

Developed in collaboration with Globalbit, a leading Israeli tech and entrepreneurship company.

Product and Business Goals

🗺️ Create a simple and realistic training experience – Ensure an intuitive interface while simulating real-world conditions like weather, visibility, and terrain.

🛰️ Enable full customization – Allow commanders to tailor crew setups and environments to match mission-specific needs.

💬 Enhance real-time communication and management – Provide seamless coordination between commanders and soldiers during training sessions.

🪖 Expand adoption in military and security forces – Position the app as a leading tactical training tool for global defense organizations.

Exploration Strategy and Research Methods

To build an effective and realistic tactical training app, I conducted in-depth qualitative research to gain a deep understanding of military unit training processes. This research was essential in identifying key requirements and ensuring the platform met the needs of both commanders and soldiers.

Key Research Approaches:

  1. Stakeholder Interviews – Engaged with military professionals and training officers to understand real-world challenges and needs.
  2. Field Observations – Studied live training sessions to identify critical elements for simulation.
  3. User Personas & Use Cases – Defined different user roles, their interactions, and essential training scenarios.

1. Stakeholder Interviews

A structured infographic with icons representing military officers, training scenarios, and communication tools, along with key takeaways from the interviews.

  • Challenges faced in real training (e.g., lack of real-time feedback, difficulty in assessing soldier performance)
  • Most requested features (e.g., simulation of real conditions, communication tools, after-action review capabilities)
  • Pain points in existing training solutions (e.g., lack of adaptability, poor tracking of training progress)

2. Field Observations

Since direct observation of live military training was not feasible, I relied on secondary research and expert insights to gather crucial information.

These alternative approaches allowed me to replicate real-world conditions in the simulation while ensuring the product met the needs of military personnel.

This included:

  • Reviewing training manuals and protocols to understand standard procedures and key elements
  • Consulting military professionals to gain firsthand insights into real-world training challenges
  • Analyzing video footage of training exercises to study movement patterns, communication methods, and tactical maneuvers
  • Researching existing military simulations to identify best practices and areas for improvement

3. User Personas & Use Cases

To create a user-centered platform, I identified key personas and developed real-world use cases tailored to their needs. This approach ensured that each role had the necessary tools and functionalities for effective training.

1. Command & Coordination – A commander sets up a training session, assigns teams, and communicates instructions through real-time voice commands.

2. Tactical Training Simulation – Soldiers navigate a simulated environment with changing weather and visibility conditions while tracking ammunition and movement.

3. After-Action Review – Training officers analyze recorded sessions, review soldier performance, and provide feedback for improvement.

3. After-Action Review – Training officers analyze recorded sessions, review soldier performance, and provide feedback for improvement.

4. Multi-Unit Collaboration – Different squads train together in a shared simulation, testing communication and coordination strategies.

5. Emergency Response Training – A high-pressure scenario where soldiers must react to sudden threats, make quick decisions, and execute proper protocols.
